Surgery at Blackford Veterinary Surgery Referral in Knoxville, TN

COVID-19 Response Policy and Patient Paperwork

Entrust your pets’ health to the talented and caring staff at Blackford Veterinary Surgery Referral. We offer clients the choice of a consultation only, or consultation and surgery the same day. Our scheduling coordinators will help you schedule appropriately based on the referral received from your primary care veterinarian. Most of our surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis. After one of our veterinary surgeons examines your pet, a diagnosis and treatment plan will be discussed with you. If surgery is the most appropriate action, it can be performed the same day, if you have been scheduled appropriately. Pain management and post operative care will also be discussed at this time. Through experience, we have found that most patients are more comfortable being at home following surgery. That means most of our patients go home the same day as surgery. This will be determined on your animal’s specific needs, and accommodations will be made if overnight care is necessary.

Preparing Your Pet for Surgery

Medical History

All pertinent medical history should be sent to our office prior to your appointment. When your veterinarian submits their referral, all records are requested at that time. If blood work or radiographs have been performed at your primary care veterinary office prior to your appointment, but after your referral has been submitted, please be sure to have all that information sent to info@blackfordvetsurgery.com. This will allow us to appropriately assess your animal and provide you with an accurate diagnosis.

Medication

Please stop giving your pet anything containing aspirin or fish oil 7-10 days prior to surgery. We also prefer that all anti-inflammatory medications, such as, Rimadyl, Etogesic, Deramaxx, Previcox, are also
stopped 7-10 days prior to surgery.

Medications such as Gabapentin, Trazodone, seizure medication, and thyroid medications may be continued up until, and including, the morning of surgery. If you have any questions regarding your pets’ current medications, please call our office to verify if administration of this prior to surgery is appropriate.

If your pet is a Bulldog, please contact our office at 865-670-9185 for a specific preoperative medication protocol.

The Day Before Surgery

Do not feed your pet after 10p.m. the night before surgery. Small sips of water throughout the night and the morning of surgery are acceptable. These instructions may be altered for animals less than 3 months of age or animals presenting for same day fracture repair.

Please contact our office at 865-670-9185 for any questions regarding your pets’ specific diet.

Fees

It is our policy to be straightforward and empathetic while discussing fees and payment options. Our consultation fee is $140. At your consultation, you will be provided with an estimate for any additional care or surgical procedures. Please understand that the cost for specialized veterinary care is typically greater than primary care veterinary bills. This is due to the extended training and experience our board certified veterinary surgeons have.

  1. Credit/Debit cards are accepted. There is a 3.5% processing fee added at the time of processing.
  2. Cash payments (no processing fee)
