ACVS Veterinary Surgeons

After graduating from veterinary school, ACVS Veterinary Surgeons must complete a one-year internship before being accepted into a 3-year residency program. This residency program requires specific training and surgical instruction under the supervision of ACVS Veterinary Surgeons. Once the candidate has completed this training and published an article in a scientific journal, he or she must submit a credentials application. If the credentials are accepted, the candidate must pass the rigorous ACVS certifying examination that tests all aspects of small animal surgery.


Dr. LeeAnn Blackford

Dr. LeeAnn Blackford of Blackford Veterinary Surgery Referral in Knoxville, TNDr. LeeAnn Blackford graduated from Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1981. After 4 years in general practice, Dr. Blackford completed a 3-year residency program in small animal surgery at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. She achieved board certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1997. Dr. Blackford has been performing referral surgery in the Knoxville area since 1986, where her specialty is in orthopedic surgery.


Dr. Rebecca Hodshon

Dr. Rebecca Hodshon of Blackford Veterinary Surgery Referral in Knoxville, TNDr. Rebecca Hodshon, DVM, DACVS-SA received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Tennessee in 2008 and completed her Small Animal Medicine and Surgery internship at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists in Maitland, Florida in 2009. She then came back to the University of Tennessee to complete her Small Animal Surgery Residency. Rebecca became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in Small Animal Surgery in 2013. During her time at the University of Tennessee she received numerous awards including, but not limited to, the CEMPH Research Symposium Resident Award of Excellence (2012), the Pfizer Animal Health Veterinary Specialty Team Award For Excellence in Internal Medicine (2008), as well as the Brandy Memorial Award (2013).

Dr. Hodshon is well versed in all types of orthopedic and soft tissue surgery. Her special interests include oncologic surgery, reconstructive surgery, and ACL repair.


Dr. D.J. Krahwinkel

Dr. D.J. Krahwinkel of Blackford Veterinary Surgery Referral in Knoxville, TNDr. D.J. Krahwinkel graduated from the University of Kentucky and completed his veterinary degree at Auburn University in 1966. He completed his masters degree at Michigan State University in 1973. He has been a Professor of Surgery at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences since 1975. Dr. Krahwinkel is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists and the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. He has authored numerous scientific publications and book chapters in his specialty of soft-tissue surgery. He is a highly respected speaker and has given scientific presentations all over the world.

  

Neurology and Behavior

Dr. Shull

Dr. Shull of Blackford Veterinary Surgery Referral in Knoxville, TNDr. Elizabeth Shull earned her DVM from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary medicine. She completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Michigan State University followed by a residency in neurology and neurosurgery at the University of Tennessee. She has completed extensive graduate studies in the field of ethology and animal behavior. Dr. Shull is a chartered diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (ACVB), where she previously served as president, and a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine-neurology (ACVIM-Neuro).

Dr. Shull has been providing specialty care to dogs and cats in Knoxville, Tennessee for over thirty years – initially as a faculty member at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine and for the past seventeen years in private specialty practice.

Dr. Becke BogueDr. Becke Bogue of Blackford Veterinary Surgery Referral in Knoxville, TN

Dr. Becke Bogue graduated from VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech in 1996. Dr. Bogue pursued additional post-doctoral training at The Animal Medical Center in New York City where she completed both her internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery, and a two-year residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine. She moved to Knoxville, TN in 2000 where she has since built her referral practice limited to internal medicine and medical oncology. Dr. Bogue’s services include: Abdominal and thoracic ultrasound, Advanced diagnostic and imaging procedures, Internal Medicine Assessment and Consultation, Chemotherapy/Medical Oncology, Class IV therapeutic laser, Balloon dilatation, and more.
